General Manager's Report on

Balances due to Depositors and owing by Borrowers.

The Statement attached hereto gives in detail the amount standing to credit of depositors. Each Branch records an increase compared with last year. The six largest increases have occurred at:

Branches with balances of £150,000 may be considered self-supporting, and in respect of Branches with balances below that figure, the following observations may be made:

Billesley. The views previously expressed regarding gradual progress are confirmed, the increase last year being £10,021. It will probably take four years to reach the £150,000 mark.

Brookvale. The progress of this Branch will be gradual because of the limited area covered by the Branch. Greater activity has been noticed since daily facilities were provided. It is estimated that it will take six years to reach the £150,000 mark.

Heybarnes. This Branch has been a disappointment from the commencement. It has taken eight years to accumulate balances of £80,784.

Kingstanding. The justification for providing daily facilities is shown by the increase of £27,847 last year.

Longbridge. After a somewhat chequered career this Branch appears to have established itself. The increase of £25,998 last year brings the balance figure to £118,656.

Perry Common. The balances now stand at £132,558, and in four or five years it should be self-supporting.

Pype Hayes. This Branch should reach the £150,000 mark next year.

Shirley. Although the balances stand at £90,049 and the increase last year was £21,670, greater progress would be recorded when better premises and increased facilities are provided.

Tower Hill. Was only opened as an Evening Branch on February last and the balances stand at £7,771.

Wells Green. The balances shown at £15,138 in the short space of three months at this Evening Branch cannot be considered as a measure of progress, because they include transfers to the extent of £12,662. The Branch is not likely to show a quick development, but it is supplying a need in the district.

Weoley Castle. A satisfactory Evening Branch. It was only opened in January 1936, and the balances are now £22,913.

Wheeler Street. A rapid development of this Branch cannot be expected, but it should become self-supporting in four or five years.

The amount outstanding in respect of Advances does not include any sum in respect of the Pheasey Estate, the first advance on which is about to be made.

General Manager's Report on Open Accounts.

Year ended 31st March 1938.

The Statement attached hereto gives in detail the number of accounts. Each Branch records an increase in Savings Bank accounts compared with last year, except Newtown Row, where the reduction is 5; Handsworth, 14; Rotton Park, 20; and Sparkbrook, 102. The six largest increases have occurred at:

Progress in the matter of open accounts varies considerably. Naturally, Branches which have been established for a long period are able to show a larger number of accounts than those which have only been in existence for a few years, but the following observations may be made:

Birchfield. The steady growth  of this Branch has been commented upon in previous years, but the establishment of a Branch at Tower Hill may retard future development.

Kingstanding. The increase of 981can be attributed to daily openings.

Quinton. The increase of 888 can be attributed to daily openings.

Sparkbrook. The number of accounts at this Branch has gradually fallen since 1922 and can be attributed to the opening of additional Branches at Sparkhill, Springfield and Hall Green, and to removals from the district.

Sutton Coldfield. The increase of 976 shows that the residents are taking a greater interest in the Bank than was noticeable during the first year.

Yardley. The increase of 873 is due, in the main, to building activities in the district.

General Manager's Report on Transactions.

Year ended 31st March 1938.

The Statement attached hereto gives in detail the number of transactions which have taken place. Each Branch records an increase compared with last year, except Duddeston, where the reduction is 168, and Newtown Row, where the reduction is 500. The six largest increases have occurred at:

The total transactions may be classified as follows:

The following observations as to variations in total transactions are offered:

Head Office. Transactions vary considerably from year to year and it is difficult to give an explanation. The numbers fell in 1929, 1932, 1934 and 1937, but rose in intervening years.

Aston. Has almost recovered ground lost in 1928.

Balsall Heath. Has almost recovered to the position in 1928.

Duddeston. Staff reduced by one officer in 1933 owing to the fall in transactions and has not recovered to justify re-grading.

Handsworth. Staff have reduced by one officer in 1932 owing to fall in transactions following the opening of Sandwell Branch. Has not recovered to justify re-grading.

Kings Heath. Has recovered ground lost in 1935 when Brandwood Branch was opened.

Ladywood. Staff reduced by one officer in 1927 owing to fall in transactions. Has not recovered to justify re-grading.

Newtown Row. This Branch was seriously affected by a large proportion of the old Summer Lane Branch depositors transferring their accounts to Wheeler Street. With new premises and greater facilities the transactions will, no doubt, increase.

Rotton Park. Removals have affected this Branch, which is still below the figure for 1930.

Sparkbrook. Staff reduced by one officer in 1930, owing to fall in transactions. The drop is due, in the main, to opening three other Branches on Stratford Road, but is also due to removals to other districts.

Spring Hill. Ground lost in 1932, when staff was reduced by one officer, has nearly recovered.

Stirchley. Staff reduced by one officer in 1931, owing to falling transactions, consequent upon opening Selly Park and Cotteridge Branches. Is getting near the figure when re-grading can be justified.

The following Branches have qualified for regrading, which involves one additional officer in each case:

Acocks Green

Birchfield

Hall Green

Hay Mills

Hockley

Horse Fair

Pype Hayes

Selly Oak

Sherlock Street

Short Heath

Yardley
